The Federal Government is set to hold Smart Cities Nigeria 2017 Conference, between 8th and 9th of August as parts of its efforts in providing a forum for stakeholders to discuss and deliberate on some of the most challenging issues confronting Nigeria as a country.

The Nigeria Smart City Initiative (NSCI), is driven by the Federal Ministry of Communications in partnership with AFRITEX initiative, is designed to bring city administrators, urban developers and measurable solutions with the goal of enhancing the livability and resilience of Nigerian cities.

“As we witness more urban migration from the rural areas, the pressure on scarce and limited infrastructure in our cities become apparent. Our actions now, or inaction, sadly, will shape how we interrelate with our environment. Transforming our environment to ‘smart cities’ therefore is not a choice but a necessity.” Smart City Initiative says.
The 2-day conference scheduled to hold at the Congress Hall, Transcorp Hilton Hotels, Abuja FCT, Nigeria, is expected to identify solutions, make proposals and develop key innovations towards sustainable smart cities in Nigeria. Our cities and indeed our lifestyle, are being formed by new innovations, scientific breakthroughs, and the digital revolution.

The event which will be widely attended by key decision makers and stakeholders in the country such as Prof. Yemi Osinbajo (GCON), Acting President, The Federal Republic of Nigeria and Special Guest of Honour for the event and Barrister Abdur-Raheem Adebayo Shittu, Honourable Minister, Federal Ministry of Communications and Chief Host for the event, is sponsored by key technology solution providers in the Country. The Smart City Initiative project is premised on public-private partnership model, with the private sector playing an active role in the drive and implementation of the various stages of the transformation. The key aim of the Smart Cities Nigeria 2017 Conference is to provide additional structure and content for an all-inclusive Smart City Initiative for Nigeria, bringing all stakeholders together through a bottom up approach, to develop concise innovation solutions and long-term vision. The digital revolution which underlies the smart city concept has considerable potential to transform urban services and modes of city governance. The approach to smart city initiatives in any country therefore, is very critical and must be a well thought out process.

With the participating states including Lagos State, Nasarawa State and Enugu State Government, and partnering institutions for the event being The Ministry of Power, Works and Housing, Federal Republic of Nigeria; Federal Ministry of Environment; Abuja Federal Capital Territory Administration; and several dignitaries as speakers and special guests of honour, the Smart Cities Initiative is the starting point to smart sustainable cities in Nigeria, and the beginning of the society we desire.
