The Independent National Electoral Commission says it has gotten 60 convictions from the 124 case files on 2015 elections received from the Nigerian Police.
Chairman, INEC Prof. Mahmud Yakubu stated this at a public hearing on a bill seeking to establish a National Electoral Offences Commission(NEOC).
Prof. Yakubu said with the establishment of the commission, it will focus in handling the huge prosecution task, time and
Stakeholders at the event who gave divergent views on the bill said it will go a long way in proving solutions to electoral offences in line with international best practices.
Clause 21 of the bill which deals with punishment for electoral corrupt practices prescribes a 10 year jail term for offenders guilty of undue influences and bribery.
