LASG plans massive road, community light projects

The Lagos State Government has initiated moves to execute electricity projects in major roads, communities and streets, including its border towns before the end of the year.

This was made known at a joint press briefing by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Public Works Corporation and Lagos State Electricity Board, as a follow up to the promise of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, during the maiden Town Hall Meeting at Ayobo, Ipaja, last on Tuesday.

Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Mr. Taofeek Fashola, plans were being concluded to illuminate major roads in the state, including all adjourning boundaries in Ogun State, including federal and state roads.

Fashola added that the projects would be delivered in phases, starting with Ikorodu to Lagos Island, Ojodu Berger to Lagos Island while about 67 communities in Ibeju Lekki, which have been in darkness for about five years, would be connected to the national grid.

The Special Assistant to the Governor on Energy, Mr.  Deji Williams, said government was set to connect street light from Ikorodu to Lagos Island to an Independent Power Plant, adding that the government was currently carrying out feasibility study to determine the best points of contact to connect the street lights along the axis.

He explained that the government was considering partnering the private sector in the maintenance aspect through outsourcing of the street lights, saying the present administration in Lagos had prioritised illuminating all roads in the state.

The SA stated that in line with the governor‘s directive, most part of the metropolis should be lit-up by December, stressing that the deadline informed the decision of the agencies to engage experienced contractor for the job.

Head of Power in the Ministry, Ibilola Kasumu, said the third phase of the project was the electrification of the Ibeju Lekki area, adding that 67 communities had been in darkness in the area for the past five years.

She said efforts were in top gear to extend power from the grid to the areas, beginning from Ibeju Lekki area, Magbon Alade, Ode-Omi and its adjourning areas before the end of the year.
