Australia Ends Syria’s World Cup Dream

Syria’s unlikely 2018 World Cup dream is over as Australia progressed to the final qualifying round courtesy of Tim Cahill’s extra-time header.
The civil war-torn nation’s hopes of a place in Russia were denied by two headed goals from 37-year-old Cahill.
Syria took the tie to extra-time but were reduced to 10 men before former Everton midfielder Cahill converted Robbie Kruse’s cross to make it 2-1.
Australia will now play either Panama, Honduras or the USA for a finals berth.
