‘Delta Is Not Part Of Biafra Republic’

‘Delta Is Not Part Of Biafra Republic’

The Delta government has dismissed move by members of a group to term the state as part of Biafra Republic. It warned them to steer clear of the state in the cause of their agitation.
The Secretary to Government (SSG), Mr. Festus Ovie Agas in a statement said that in recent times, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) have intensified their agitation for the realisation of their desire for an independent entity out of the present day Nigeria.
He noted that the campaign has been in the form of rallies across various towns and cities in the South-East, often extending to South-South states, notably Rivers and Delta.

Part of the statement reads: “Faced with this situation, it has become imperative for the Government of Delta State to make this clarification to avoid any confusion or misunderstanding regarding the status of Delta State in the renewed Biafra agitation.
“While some communities in the state may have cultural affinity with the people of the South-East, it is clearly a patent error for anybody
or group to suggest or insinuate that Delta State, or more specifically, the Anioma people have been or are part of the South-East that is supposed to make up the proposed Biafra Republic.’’
He emphasised that the people of the present Delta State have always occupied a unique position in the Nigeria federation and were never part of the Southeast as being suggested by the Biafran agitators.
The SSG, therefore, rejected the inclusion of Delta State without her consent in the proposed Biafra Republic.
He also warned against restive activities in the state.
Members of the Biafra Independent Movement (BIM) and MASSOB had in Warri, during a peaceful rally to mark 17 years of non-exodus agitation towards actualization of their desire for a Biafra nation, allegedly alluded to Delta State as part of the states under envisaged republic.
