 EMPLOYMENT TRUST FUND: SENATOR ASHAFA, OTHERS LAUD THE INITIATIVE

AshafaSenator Olugbenga Ashafa (Lagos East) and other dignitaries on Monday lauded the Employment Trust Fund (ETF) initiative of the Lagos State Government, describing it as a goldmine and a paradigm shift from past unsuccessful empowerment initiatives.
They gave the commendation in Ikorodu on Monday at the 2nd stakeholders’ forum/ interactive session organized by the State Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment to intimate the residents and relevant stakeholders with the wealth creation programme of the State Government,
According to Ashafa, past empowerment initiatives did not serve the intended purpose of true empowerment as those targeted were not given the right information, orientation and training thereby making it impossible to actualise the intended objective.
The Senator noted that the current empowerment initiative, being spearheaded by the State Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment, would be done on an expanded platform to what is currently being done at various levels by some lawmakers and will also serve as an opportunity for those not yet captured in the existing empowerment schemes.
Earlier in his opening remark, the Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment Hon. Babatunde Durosinmi-Etti, assured the participants at the interactive session that the peculiarity and needs of Ikorodu area would be taken into consideration when planning the empowerment programmes for the area.
The Commissioner explained that establishment of Employment Centres across the State is one of the strategies employed to create platforms that will bring together people seeking employment and the employers of labour, adding that employability training programme would be carried out in each centre regularly to make job seekers fit into the available jobs.
He also disclosed that with the mandate of the Ministry to create wealth and reduce unemployment in the State, the process of data gathering of the unemployed across the state had commenced while the ministry will also partner private sectors, social entrepreneurs, legislators and Local Government Chairmen to deliver its mandate.
While declaring that each Local Government Area in the State will have a wealth creation unit, Durosimi-Etti averred that the Ministry is ready to build capacity of all residents at the grass root level just as he urged all LG/LCDAs to create platforms for the youth to carry out constructive engagement that will develop their inherent potentials.
The Commissioner also said that the Ministry will also set up incubation centres where upcoming artisans can work and earn a living without being hampered by unavailability of workshops or tools, adding that “the incubation centres will render assistance to our young entrepreneurs by providing tools and equipment to those who do not have the financial capacity to set up their own workshop’’.
Also speaking at the forum, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mr. Fola Padonu said the State government has inaugurated a Board of Trustees charged with the task of developing modalities that will make the ETF accessible to qualified applicants.
