SOME unclaimed Permanent Voter Cards have been reportedly burnt inside the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Umu-Ikaa, in the Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area of Abia State.
It was learnt that INEC workers in the local government relocated to the office on Tuesday after their former office was burnt down four years ago.
It was gathered that the fire started in the early hours of Sunday, February 3.
A source in the community said the fire woke up some youths in the area, who mobilised and alerted the police.
It was gathered that through the joint effort of the police and the youths, the fire was later put out.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Geoffrey Ogbonna, said suspected hoodlums had poured fuel through the window of the office where the PVCs were kept and set fire to them.
Ogbonna explained that the fire did not consume the entire building.
He said, “We are investigating what happened. Only the voter register and the PVCs were affected by the fire.”
