Ighalo happy to break Eagles 13-year opening game jinx

Odion Ighalo is happy to score his first Africa Cup of Nations goal and believes the Super Eagles 1-0 win over Burundi on Saturday will boost the team’s confidence ahead of their clash against Guinea on Wednesday.

Substitute Ighalo’s 76th minute strike, after just four minutes on the pitch, ensured the Eagles won an opening group match at the AFCON for the first time in 13 years.

The last time they won an opening game at the tournament was against Ghana in 2006, incidentally also in Egypt.

“I really feel great to have come on and scored because as a player when you are called upon to come in, you have to do your best. It wasn’t easy for us but then you don’t expect easy matches,” the Shanghai Shenhua striker, who came on for Paul Onuachu, said in the post-match interview.

“I think we have set the tone for ourselves moving forward and our confidence has improved. We won it in 2013 and obviously being here we want to win it again.”

Nigeria will face Guinea in their next game on Wednesday, but it remains to be seen if the former Watford striker will be handed his first start at the tournament.

Nigeria leads Group B after the first round of matches with three points.
