President Muhammadu Buhari has promised not to interfere in the affairs of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of the March 23 supplementary election.
Buhari made this known on Sunday through his senior special assistant on media, Mallam Garba Shehu, where he stated that he won’t bow to pressure from some chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who have been criticising him for being unfair.
Recall INEC fixed supplementary elections in Rivers, Bauchi, Sokoto, Kano, Plateau and Benue, an exercise described by APC as illegal.
“Party members in states where there will be supplementary elections then need to be reminded that they need to work hard to earn their people’s votes, rather than expect President Buhari to manipulate INEC in their favour. “
“Under President Buhari, INEC has been and will be completely independent throughout the elections, free from any interference. President Buhari is a man of conviction, and the manipulation of election results goes against everything he stands for, INEC is completely in charge,” he said.
