Insurance Return To NPFL After 11 Years

Insurance of Benin have sealed promotion to the Nigeria Professional Football League after beating Remo Stars 1-0 on Monday in their second match of the Nigeria National League Super 8 Play-offs in Aba.

A goal from Junior Osaghae ensured that the Benin Arsenal accrue maximum six points after two matches to secure promotion with a match left. Insurance last played in the topflight 11 seasons ago.

They will play rivals Shooting Stars in their last match on Wednesday. Remo, who play their last match against Delta Force, are second in the group with three points – same as third- place 3SC.

Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission Godwin Dudu-Orumen told our correspondent that the club would focus on maintaining their status in the NPFL when the season begins on January 13.

He said Insurance were grateful to the Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki, who ensured that the team got the needed support in their promotion drive.

“Insurance that people see today is a product of many years’ efforts and hard work put in place to ensure the realisation of this dream. The darling club of the Edo people had been away from topflight football for a long time and our sports-loving governor ensured that we got all the support needed to achieve that dream,” he said.

“The team have a lot of young players, who are hungry for glory. But the focus is to finish as high as possible in the abridged NPFL when the season begins. It will be foolhardy to gain promotion and return to relegation the same season, so we will ensure a correct blend of youth and experience to remain in the topflight.

“After that, we will then work on winning titles in the league and achieve continental qualification as well.”

He said the club were determined to ensure they ended the Super 8 unbeaten, adding that they would take all their remaining matches seriously.

In the other group, Gombe United beat Real Stars 1-0 while Kogi United lost 3-0 to Kada City Stars. Kada are top of the group with four points – same as second-placed Gombe. Real are third and Kogi are fourth with a point respectively.
