The maiden Bolanle Ambode Women Championship was concluded over the weekend at Agege Stadium with Jagunmolu Queens Football Club claiming the title.
16 amateur teams from different part of Lagos participated in the tournament designed to showcase talented girls and give them opportunity to take their careers to the next level.
Cynthia Megaha scored the solitary goal that helped Jagunmolu Queens Football Club secure a one zero victory over Young Talent 99 Football Academy in the final.
Megha’s header in the first half made the different as the pre-tournament favourites, Young Talent 99 failed to find the back of the net despite their dominance in the pulsating encounter.
In the third place playoff decided earlier, Pheonix Queens Football defeated Ijamido Queens Football Club by three goals to two. The wife of the governor, Mrs Bolanle Ambode was represented at the final by Mrs, Oluwakemi Oladele Oke, Director, Ministry of Education.
Executive Chairman of the Lagos state sports commission, Dr Kweku Tandoh commended the first lady’s passion for girls and women development as well as her magnanimity to the tournament. Tandoh added the competition will enhance the state’s achievements in grassroots development.
The senior special assistant on Sports, Adeyinka Adeboye whose office facilitated the competition stated that the Bolanle Ambode Women Championship will be annual event. Adeboye lauded the support of the executive chairman of Surulere Local Government, Honourable Tajudeen Ajide who has also promised to sponsor next year’s tournament.
Other dignitaries at the grand finale includes Barrister Oluseyi Akinwunmi, Chairman of the Lagos state football association and first vice president of the Nigeria Football Federation, Mrs Abosede Otun, Senior Special Assistant to the governor on Education amongst others.
