The Lagos State Government, on Thursday, renewed its call against all forms of abuse and domestic violence.
Speaking during a Sensitisation Campaign organised by the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA), which kicked off at the JJT Park, Alausa, the Honourable Commissioner, Mrs. Bolaji Dada decried the increasing rate of rape and other gender-based violence in recent times, saying that no efforts would be spared to combat the menace.
She explained that the involvement of the State Governor and some other political office holders in the campaign underscores the importance present administration’s resolve to combat domestic violence.
“This Walk organised by Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, is to further drive home the message against the menace. I can assure Lagosians that the State government would work hard with the Police Command and all other relevant agencies to drastically reduce the vice”, Dada assured.
She emphatically warned that no offender of any domestic violence-related crime would go unpunished, stressing that rape, domestic violence and child abuse are crimes which must be treated as such and appropriate sanctions instituted against offenders.
“Our government, by this walk, has demonstrated that we are totally against it; we stand against everything about this issue and we are going to ensure that we have zero-tolerance for it. So, anyone caught in the act of sexual violence, child abuse, domestic violence, would be made to pay dearly for it; that’s why we are using this advocacy to warn and to tell people to desist because the full arm of the law will be brought to bear on anybody or institution found wanting in any form”.
While maintaining that abuse against any gender should not be condoned, Mrs. Dada pleaded with women and men to co-exist peacefully with respect for one another and their individual differences.
She, however, encouraged victims of these deplorable acts to open up to necessary authorities, including the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, whenever their rights are infringed upon, adding that the government will take up such issues and ensure that justice prevails.
