The Lagos state government has issued an abatement notice to some residents in the coconut area of Apapa local government for violating the environmental laws of the state. Commissioner for the environment, Babatunde Durosinmi Ettti served the notice during a massive clean up exercise In the area.
These are officials of the ministry of the environment carrying out an enormous clearing of refuse in the coconut area of Apapa. For so long, this heap of refuse has caused an environmental nuisance. Read the press release below
LASG SEALS BUILDINGS FOR DIRTY ENVIRONMENT AS CLEANING OF APAPA COMMENCES
The Lagos State Government has sealed some buildings, located on Egbaiyelo Street, around the Tin Can-Coconut axis of Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, for unsanitary practices, ranging from open defecation, dirty environment and illegal dumping of refuse among others.
Giving the sealing order during the commencement of cleaning intervention of the Apapa area of Lagos State at the weekend was the Commissioner for the Environment, Mr. Babatunde Durosinmi-Etti, who emphasised that the Zero Tolerance for Environmental Nuisance Policy of the State Government was still very much in force.
He warned residents who were in the habit of abusing the environment through different forms of infractions such as keeping unwieldy environment, littered with all kinds of articles, converting open spaces to dump sites, erecting illegal stall extensions and engaging in street trading etc. to desist from these bad environmental behaviour or face serious sanctions from government.
Durosinmi-Etti said that the government had the duty to promote the welfare of all residents by safeguarding the environment, stressing that no responsible government would fold its arms and allow the reckless attitude of a few to compromise the wellbeing of all Lagosians.
His words: “We have no option than to act fast to nip this kind of unpleasant development in the bud, if we must prevent the outbreak of epidemics in our State as dirty environment comes with serious hazards”
He reiterated that the ongoing beautification of Apapa, starting from Commercial Avenue environs, and the cleaning intervention of the area, particularly the Tin Can-Coconut section of the Apapa-Oshodi expressway were parts of government’s determined efforts to sanitise the Apapa neighborhood.
Appreciating the support of stakeholders, he noted with relief the collaborative efforts of the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), plank sellers and CDAs in the Tin Can-Coconut area for the successful takeoff of the cleaning intervention.
“As promised, we have massively deployed facilities to ensure that litters along the road median of the Tin Can-Coconut section of the Apapa-Oshodi expressway were carted away in record time”, he stated.

For the residents, it Is time to heave a sigh of relief. With these in concerted efforts to keep lagos clean, residents have been enjoined to desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse and support the government’s cleaner lagos initiative.
