As part of efforts to make the environment more people friendly, Lagos State Planning and Environmental Monitoring Authority (LASPEMA) is set to embark on a public advocacy and awareness campaign aimed at sensitising the residents on their responsibilities toward this goal.
The agency said it hopes to achieve this by making public its mode of operations, to guide the residents, especially those who have been making enquiries to the office.
Speaking with newsmen in his Office at Alausa, Ikeja recently, the Acting General Manager of LASPEMA, Engineer Olarenwaju Kazeem, said that the planned advocacy and public enlightenment will target car wash operators as well as others.
He stated that the need for the campaign was informed by the reports from field officers on a pre-censor survey which revealed that most of those involved in car wash business lacked the understanding of how their operations affect the environment.
“The pre-censor survey carried out indicates that about 85 percent of those involved in the car wash business fall into this category and that does not augur well for the environmental sustainability policy of the present administration,” he said.
Commenting on the outcome of the pre-censor survey also, Mr. Taiwo Osisanya, the Director, Planning and Research in the Agency, noted that violation of Lagos State Environmental Law will no longer be condoned by the government.
While condemning the indiscriminate flouting of the environmental rules and regulations by some of these business outfits, Osisanya called for introspection and attitudinal change among those engaged in car wash business in Lagos.
