THE Nigeria Union of Journalists, Rivers State Council, has condemned th killings that marred the elections in the state on Saturday.
The NUJ decried the killing of a soldier, former chairman of Andoni Local Government Area, Mowan Etete, and others during the presidential and National Assembly elections in the state.
In a statement by the state NUJ Chairman, Stanley Stanley, and Secretary, Ike Wigodo, the union criticised politicians for making the elections a do-or-die affair.
Calling on politicians in the state to play by the rules and desist from do-or-die politics, the union called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of those behind the killings.
“The brutal murder of Mowan Etete and others during Saturday’s elections should not be swept under the carpet. The perpetrators of the dastardly act, including their sponsors, must be brought to book,” the statement read.
The union, however, commended the NUJ Election Monitoring Team and other journalists in the state for their peaceful conduct during the elections and urged them to be objective in their reports.
