Kano Pillars Handball Club became the first team to record a win after beating Lagos Seasiders 38-27 in the opening game of the Prudent Energy Handball league, which began yesterday at the sports hall of the National Stadium in Abuja. The Seasiders,

who finished second last year, suffered the shock in the hands of Pillars, who are looking to do well this year. The Lagos team will have to improve if it hopes to challenge for top prize in the two-phased Premier League.

In other games played, Kada Stars of Kaduna defeated Borno Spiders of Maiduguri 38-31, Owena Queens of Akure lost to Imo Grasshoppers of Owerri 11-38, defending champions, Plateau Peacock and Edo Dynamos settled for 18-18 draw,

a match that kept the fans on the edge of their seats. Also, De Defenders beat Owena Kings 36 -21, while Safety Babes walloped Desert Queens 43-20.
