Reps Investigate Customs Over Lagos Killings

The House of Representatives is to investigate the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) for allegedly killing four persons in Lagos last month.

The Service would also be investigated for maiming of innocent passers-by, illegal raiding of markets, warehouses, breaking into shops to impound contraband goods, diversion of impounded goods for personal gains by its officials.

The ad-hoc committee has six weeks to investigate and report back to the House.

The decision of the lawmakers followed the adoption of a motion by Olajide Olatunbosun (APC, Oyo) who opined that the core mandate of the Customs Service should be restricted to the borders, seaports and airports.

In his argument, Olatubosun expressed concern that over the years, several Nigerians and foreigners, who were undertaking their legitimate businesses, had either been violently killed or maimed and their property forcibly taken from them by overzealous armed Customs officers.
